THE OPEN SEA OUTPOST
Daedalus Reef rises from 450 metres of open sea, 100 km southeast of Marsa Alam. With no neighbouring reefs to break the current, it stands fully exposed – drawing nutrients, sharks, and pelagics from the open Red Sea. Its 1,070 m length and 300 m width provide enough shelter to moor overnight at the southern lighthouse pier, making it a liveaboard staple.
The reef walls descend to 20 m before sloping outward to 40 m, then plunge into the abyss. Their upper sections are riddled with crevices filled with hard and soft corals. On the northern tip, steel beams from the wreck of the Zealot – resting at 90 m – appear on the shallower reef wall.

WHAT DEFINES DAEDALUS
Shark Capital
Hammerheads at 40 m on the northern tip, oceanic whitetips circling the southern moorings, and grey reef sharks along every wall.
Coral Walls
Dense coverage of hard and soft corals from surface to depth, with crevices, niches, and sea fans draped across every vertical face.
Anemone Colony
A spectacular colony of anemones at 5–10 m on the western wall, alive with resident anemonefish — one of the largest in the Red Sea.
Wreck Remains
Steel beams from the MV Zealot visible on the northern reef wall. The main wreck rests at 90 m for technical divers only.
Southern Plateau
A sandy plateau at 30–40 m beneath the lighthouse moorings. Soft corals, old pier remains, and curious oceanic whitetips.
Open Sea Currents
Powerful currents sweep nutrients around the reef – the engine that drives the exceptional biodiversity and shark activity.

The convergence of open-sea currents around an isolated seamount creates conditions found nowhere else – a magnet for both reef species and the open-water giants that chase them.
DIVE ROUTES
FOUR WAYS TO EXPLORE THE REEF
Each side of Daedalus offers a different experience. Most divers are brought by RIB to their entry point and collected after the dive.
Northern Tip
Descend to 40 m and look for hammerheads in the blue. Dive east along the reef with the wall on your right. Strong current makes westward diving difficult. RIB collection at end.
Western Side (Afternoon)
Enter at the northern end of the reef indentation to a maximum of 10 m – essential to find the anemone colony. Drift south with the current, reef on your left. With a favourable current you may reach the southern mooring.
Eastern Side (Morning)
Enter by RIB and dive south along the reef with the wall on your right. Watch the blue — sharks may appear at any depth along this wall.
Southern Plateau
Enter directly from the liveaboard. Explore the sandy plateau at 30–40 m among soft corals and pier remains. Watch bottom time carefully, then ascend the south wall for a safety stop.

Watch your depth
The walls drop steeply. At 40 m on the northern tip it is easy to go deeper while scanning the blue for sharks.
No night divesÂ
The site is too exposed and current conditions too unpredictable after dark.
Hammerheads at the northern tip
Best chances at 40 m early morning when current splits west of the tip.
Anemone colony on the western wall
at 5–10 m — do not exceed this depth or you will miss it entirely.
