THE DOLPHIN SANCTUARY OF THE DEEP SOUTH
Sataya Reef (frequently designated as the “Dolphin House of the South”) is the largest and most spectacular offshore reef formation within the Fury Shoals maritime park network. Situated roughly 45 kilometers southeast of the Hamata coastline, this epic, crescent-shaped limestone barrier stretches over five kilometers across the open sea, cutting a dramatic turquoise crescent into the deep indigo waters of the outer Red Sea.
The unique physical layout of Sataya creates an unparalleled marine refuge. The massive northern outer reef wall bears the brunt of dominant winds and sea swells, completely sheltering a vast, sandy inner lagoon that hovers at an easy 5 to 15 metres deep. This pristine, sun-drenched pool serves as a vital nursery, resting zone, and social playground for a permanent, resident population of wild spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris). While the inner sandy flats offer a relaxed paradise for snorkelers and novice divers, the dramatic outer drop-offs feature vibrant vertical structures that drop past 40 metres into the deep channel.

FOUR WAYS TO EXPLORE THE REEF
Diving at Sataya is split between highly managed, shallow interactions with the resident dolphin pod inside the lagoon and striking drift profiles along the outer coral walls.
The Dolphin Lagoon Swim
The definitive Sataya experience. Typically conducted by dropping from a zodiac or swimming straight from the liveaboard dive platform into the shallow central pool. Move slowly over the brilliant white sand bed at 6–10 metres. Keep your movements entirely passive and let the inquisitive spinner dolphins circle, spiral, and communicate around you on their own terms.
The Pinnacle Maze (Southwest Corner)
Drop from the moored vessel to explore a beautifully structured field of detached *Porites* coral towers. Weave through the sunlit corridors between the pinnacles where massive columns of orange anthias and schooling bannerfish face the mild current. Keep an eye out for well-camouflaged scorpionfish and large blue-spotted rays on the sand patches.
The Outer North Drop-off
A high-energy drift route for advanced divers. Dropped by zodiac on the exposed, current-swept northern wall of the horseshoe. Descend along a sheer vertical cliff face that drops into the deep blue. Scan the outer open water for passing pelagic predators, grey reef sharks, and schools of barracuda before rounding the corner into calmer waters.
The Amphorae Ridge
A relaxed, historical drift along the inner southeastern slope. Dropped by zodiac and drifting gently with the reef on your left shoulder. Search the sandy gaps and coral contours at 12 metres to spot the ancient Roman amphorae fragments that have become completely fused into the living reef structure over thousands of years.

TIPS & HAZARDS
DIVE SAFE AT SATAYA
Never touch, chase, or pin the dolphins
The spinner dolphins use the shallow lagoon specifically for sleep and socializing after hunting in the deep ocean at night. Never swim aggressively toward them, dive down directly at them, or try to touch them. Respect their boundaries.
Keep a sharp eye on zodiac traffic
Because Sataya is a major hotspot for dolphin excursions, multiple zodiacs and speedboats move back and forth across the lagoon. Always carry a DSMB, look upward before ascending, and stay close to the shallow reef structure when surfacing.
Maintain perfect trim over the sand flats
The white sand inside the lagoon is exceptionally fine. Mismanaged fin kicks or standing on the bottom will instantly silt out the water, ruining visibility for photographers and disturbing the resting dolphins.
Watch for the afternoon current switch
While the lagoon is generally a lake-like pool, the open channels at the tips of the horseshoe can experience a rapid change in current direction during tidal shifts. Pay close attention to your guide’s briefings.
Time your photography for the midday sun
To capture the surreal, glowing turquoise hues of the lagoon and the dolphin pod against the white sand, execute your shallow lagoon dives or snorkeling sessions between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM when the sun is at its highest point.
