What is the CMAS One-Star Instructor course?

The CMAS One-Star Instructor course, CMAS ★, is the first instructor qualification of the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques, developing an experienced Three-Star Diver into someone who can teach diving theory and practical scuba skills safely and effectively. In Hurghada it costs €1,200 per person for the training, with CMAS federation, registration, instructor materials, examination, assessment and certification fees charged separately. Candidates must be at least eighteen, hold CMAS Three-Star Diver for at least one year, have at least 100 logged open water dives across varied conditions, and hold valid first aid, CPR and oxygen-administration qualifications; the program covers theory instruction, confined water and open water teaching, lesson planning, skill demonstrations and emergency procedures, and requires theoretical, confined-water, open-water, teaching-skills and emergency-procedure assessments. Red Sea Diving runs it in Hurghada on the Egyptian Red Sea.

Moreover, being an excellent diver does not automatically make someone an excellent instructor; the whole course is about learning to recognize what a student needs, not what you already know. Therefore we review your logbook, certification date and first-aid qualifications before we confirm a program, and we explain in writing any CMAS fee that applies. The program follows the standards published by the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques.

How does CMAS One-Star Instructor differ from PADI and BSAC instructor routes?

All three turn an experienced diver into a teacher, and all three assess theory, confined water and open water teaching. By contrast, CMAS asks for the most experience up front: Three-Star Diver held a full year, plus 100 logged dives across night, drift, limited-visibility and navigation conditions, before training even begins. PADI’s IDC accepts a Divemaster, and BSAC’s IFC accepts a Sports Diver, both with fewer logged dives required.

Furthermore, CMAS also requires oxygen administration training upfront, where PADI folds it into EFR Instructor separately and BSAC leaves it for later instructor levels. Consequently a CMAS One-Star Instructor typically arrives more experienced, even before the course starts.

In short, all three systems are taught here, and we can advise honestly on which fits the certification you already hold.

What does the CMAS One-Star Instructor course teach?

Theory instruction

Setting objectives, structuring lessons, explaining concepts clearly and checking understanding, so the student learns rather than listens.

Practical instruction

Above all, briefing, demonstrating, positioning students safely, observing performance and correcting mistakes, which is a different craft from performing the skill yourself.

Confined water teaching

Likewise, managing positioning, demonstrations, practice and safety in the pool, assessed as part of certification.

Open water teaching

In addition, managing students, depth, gas, current and surface support together, with its own CMAS assessment.

Demonstration quality

Clear, controlled, accurate and easy to observe, because students copy exactly what they see an instructor do.

Lesson planning

Furthermore, organizing a session around objectives, student level, environment and safety, before anyone gets in the water.

Student assessment

Deciding whether a student has met the objective, when to repeat a skill, and how to give feedback that changes the next attempt.

Emergency procedures

Preparing for and responding to a developing problem, assessed formally as its own component of certification.

Communication and leadership

Finally, the skills that let you run a class, not only demonstrate a skill within it.

However, the objective is not to show a student how much the instructor knows. In other words, the objective is that the student understands, which is the whole point of the course.

Students copy exactly what they see, which is why the demonstration is the lesson.

How is the CMAS One-Star Instructor Hurghada course scheduled?

  1. Review, before training

To begin with, we review your Three-Star certification date, logged dives, night and drift diving experience, first-aid and oxygen qualifications.

  2. Theory and lesson planning

Then teaching methodology, lesson planning and the theoretical assessment, applied to real diving knowledge rather than memorized.

  3. Confined water instruction

Next, demonstration quality, student positioning, correction and the confined-water teaching assessment.

  4. Open water instruction

Afterward, teaching real students in open water, managing depth, gas, current and surface support, toward the open-water assessment.

  5. CMAS One-Star Instructor

Finally, the teaching-skills and emergency-procedure assessments, and your certification as a CMAS instructor.

However, the exact schedule depends on your existing experience, your progress and current CMAS assessment arrangements. Consequently we confirm the day-by-day plan once we have reviewed your logbook.

Why train in Hurghada?

An instructor candidate needs students, and Hurghada supplies them all year: beginners in the pool every morning, sheltered reefs minutes from the marina, daily boats and an international mix of divers to brief in more than one language. Consequently your supervised teaching hours are real lessons with real students, not rehearsals with fellow candidates.

Furthermore, the same base runs daily diving and liveaboards, so night, drift and deeper dives toward your 100-dive requirement can all be logged here before or during your instructor program. Our procedures sit on the diving safety page.

Equally, we teach PADI, BSAC and CMAS instructor routes, so our own instructor team already coordinates across systems every week.
