What is the BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller course?

The BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller course is the British Sub-Aqua Club’s entry-level snorkelling program for younger children, seven progressive in-water sessions, each named after a different dolphin and each rewarded with its own sticker. In Hurghada it costs €150 per child, with any applicable BSAC registration or certification fee charged separately. Open from age six to any child who can swim and is comfortable in the water, the course needs no previous experience and uses only a mask, snorkel and fins, never a scuba cylinder. Sessions run in a pool or suitable sheltered water, paced entirely around the individual child, and collecting all seven dolphin stickers earns the BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller grade. Red Sea Diving runs it in Hurghada as a BSAC training center.

Moreover, the €150 covers what happens here: the instruction, the seven sessions and the equipment for the water. Therefore we explain in writing any BSAC fee that applies before you confirm. The program follows the structure published by the British Sub-Aqua Club for young snorkellers.

How does BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller differ from PADI Bubblemaker?

Both are the first step for a young child in the water here, and both open the door to everything that follows. By contrast, they take different equipment. PADI Bubblemaker opens from age eight and uses a real scuba cylinder and regulator in water up to two meters deep. Dolphin Snorkeller opens two years younger, from age six, and stays entirely at the surface with a mask, snorkel and fins.

Furthermore, the pace differs too. Bubblemaker is a single supervised session; Dolphin Snorkeller spreads the same idea, water confidence first and skills after, across seven separate sessions, which suits a younger or more cautious child well.

In short, choose Dolphin Snorkeller for the youngest children or anyone who wants snorkelling first. Otherwise, if your child is eight or older and keen to breathe underwater, Bubblemaker is the faster route, and we run both.

What do the seven dolphin sessions cover?

1. Bottlenose Dolphin

Water confidence first. Above all, becoming comfortable in and around the pool before anything else is introduced.

2. Spinner Dolphin

Mask and snorkel skills: correct fit, breathing through the snorkel and basic clearing, practiced until it feels natural.

3. Dusky Dolphin

In addition, fins and efficient movement, plus swimming with the mask and snorkel together.

4. Striped Dolphin

Safe entries and exits, controlled finning and the first buddy awareness, snorkelling alongside a partner.

5. Clymene Dolphin

Likewise, mask and snorkel clearing under more control, surface diving and steadier water control.

6. River Dolphin

Improved finning, feet-first diving and basic buddy rescue awareness, with safety kept central throughout.

7. Risso’s Dolphin

Finally, the skills assessment, where the instructor checks every skill is comfortable and confident before the last sticker.

However, each session earns its own dolphin sticker, and collecting all seven completes the course. In other words, the reward comes at every stage, not only at the end.

How is the BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller course scheduled?

  1. Before the first session

To begin with, we ask for your child’s age, swimming ability, height and any previous snorkelling experience, so equipment and pacing are ready.

  2. Sessions one to three

Then water confidence, mask and snorkel skills, and fins and movement, each built on the one before.

  3. Sessions four to six

Next, entries, exits and buddy skills, followed by underwater skills and then finning, diving and basic rescue awareness.

  4. Session seven

Afterward, the skills assessment, checking every skill comfortably and confidently before the final sticker.

  5. BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller

Finally, the completed set of seven stickers and the grade, with Snorkel Diver as the natural next step.

However, no child is pushed through a stage before they are ready. Consequently the exact number of pool visits can vary from child to child.

Who can join Dolphin Snorkeller?

  • Children from age six
  • Also, comfortable swimmers, assessed by the instructor before the first session
  • Likewise, no previous snorkelling experience needed
  • In addition, correctly fitted child-sized mask, snorkel and fins
  • Furthermore, a parent or guardian reachable throughout the course
  • Above all, children who are ready to be in the water, not pushed into it

Already comfortable snorkelling, or eight or older? PADI Seal Team and the BSAC Discovery Diver course both introduce a scuba cylinder for children ready for that step. Moreover, this course never uses a tank, so it suits the youngest or the most cautious first-timers best.

Why learn to snorkel in Hurghada?

Hurghada gives a young snorkeller warm water for most of the year and a genuinely rich Red Sea just offshore, so the skills learned in the pool have somewhere exciting to go afterward. Moreover, colorful reef fish and coral are close enough that a family snorkel trip is a natural next outing once the course is done.

Furthermore, we teach children to protect what they see from the very first session: never stand on coral, never touch or chase marine life, and never leave anything behind. However, marine-life encounters are natural and therefore never guaranteed.

Equally, the seven-session structure fits comfortably inside a family holiday, and our diving safety standards apply to every young guest in the water.
